Rising energy costs have posed hardships for so many Americans, from higher prices at the pump to increased rates for natural gas, heating, and electricity. Global demand has been rebounding since the start of the pandemic and the supply of crude to meet that increased demand has been tight. Global conflicts have also compounded that tight supply. We want to make sure you have the facts when asked about the role both Chevron and the energy industry at large are playing as these rapidly changing events unfold.

Gas Prices and Rising Energy Costs

Many factors figure into the price we see at the pump. First is the price of a barrel of oil, which is set on the global market and subject to the fundamentals of supply and demand. Other factors in the price of gas include the competitive conditions in the marketplace; costs associated with fuel distribution; and local, state, and federal taxes. Recent inflationary and market pressures come into play as well and result in higher costs – things like wages, supply chain challenges, and fixed costs of doing business.

Chevron does not control the market price of crude oil or natural gas, nor of refined products like gasoline and diesel fuel. And we have no tolerance for price gouging. Most of our branded stations across the United States are owned and operated by businesspeople who independently decide what to charge for a gallon of gasoline. Prices are not imposed by Chevron. We know many of you are being asked questions about prices at the pump, so we broke down the facts to give you the tools to better explain these complex matters. The U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce held a hearing on April 6 and Chevron’s CEO Mike Wirth discussed surging energy costs resulting from the war in Ukraine and economies rebounding from the pandemic. First and foremost, Mike expressed Chevron’s grave concern for the millions of Ukrainian people who have lost loved ones, their homes, and livelihoods because of this senseless war. He also shared our sincere hope that leaders across the globe find a path to end the hostilities and support a prompt and just diplomatic resolution.

He also stressed Chevron’s understanding of the hardship caused by rising energy costs on American lives – from higher gasoline prices to increased rates on natural gas, heating and electricity – and that we remain committed to providing affordable, reliable and ever-cleaner energy. Mike made it clear that we do not control the market price of crude oil or natural gas, nor of refined products like gasoline and diesel fuel, and we have no tolerance for price gouging. By pursuing the responsible development of oil and gas, while doing our part to advance a lower carbon future, we’re answering the call for a strong domestic supply of energy by leveraging our strengths to deliver lower carbon energy.

Advocacy Training Sessions Now Available!

The long-awaited advocacy training sessions for Chevron employees and the broader audience is finally here! The Chevron Advocacy Network is offering a series of online advocacy training sessions. The training will highlight Chevron’s strategy, with focus on our lower-carbon future. The training will also help you to effectively communicate these issues to your family, friends, or anyone outside the industry. We encourage you and your team to sign-up for one of the training dates. Once you register for one of the trainings you will be sent a calendar invite to your email.

The 2022 Election cycle has kicked off and CAN has been in touch with employees and CAN members about key dates and opportunities to have their voice heard in their state’s elections.

We encourage you to visit our Civic Action Center, a one-stop-shop designed to answer all your electoral process and voter participation questions. The Civic Action Center allows you to register to vote, check voter registration status, find absentee ballot and early voting information, learn about candidates and current elected officials, and view polling locations and get local election updates.

No matter where in the country or for whom you cast your ballot on election day, participating and voting in elections is one of the most fundamental freedoms we have as Americans, and it is integral to upholding the values of our democracy. Your voice matters and your vote makes a difference!

CAN IS GROWING!

In February we launched our first ever CAN chapter in Colorado as we welcomed legacy Noble employees to our program. The employees of Chevron’s Rockies Business Unit in Greeley and Denver Colorado have done a great deal to support our industry’s advocacy efforts over the years and we are very thankful for their support and excited to welcome them to join our advocacy efforts.
In March we launched another new CAN chapter at Chevron’s Oronite Oak Point office in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. Thanks to our new CAN Champions and planning team in Oak Point, CAN hosted a kickoff event with guest speaker Tommy Faucheux, President of the Louisiana’s Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association.
We partnered with the Chevron Retirees Association (CRA) in March to host a series of 90-minute advocacy training sessions for retirees of Chevron and our legacy companies. More than 60 retirees attended the training and reported that they felt empowered to take the next steps to share CAN resources and have conversations with their family and friends on the issues. Our retirees are among the most trusted voices in their communities, and we rely on them to tell their personal stories, speaking up about the many benefits of oil and natural gas. In fact, Chevron retirees make up about 20 percent of all CAN members!

Lower Carbon Partnerships, Investments and News

In addition to the REG agreement, Chevron also announced a host of other collaborations and financial commitments to solidify role in a lower carbon future. These include:

Announcing a new venture with Carbon Clean, a global leader in cost-effective industrial carbon capture
Work with Project Canary to independently certify the operational and environmental performance of individual wells at five sites in the Permian and Denver-Julesburg basins
Co-develop and construct 30 hydrogen fueling sites across California by 2026 agreement with the Iwatani Corporation
Further establishing our joint venture with Bunge North America, Inc. to create the capacity to produce 100,000 barrels per day of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel by 2030
Chevron New Energies (CNE) announced its first carbon offsets project to provide funding to plant an expected 1.7 million native bald cypress seedlings across southeastern Louisiana
Plans to increase production in the Permian Basin by 10% as economic and geopolitical events have increased demand for reliable, affordable energy
